Elegant Platinum and Gold Cufflinks

Since the Edwardian era of the early 1900s,  beautiful jewels had been created with platinum tops and gold backs.  In the early 1920s platinum cost eight to ten times as much as gold - now platinum is only twice as costly as gold.  So platinum jewels often had a mirror-like layer of engraved platinum on top of 14kt yellow gold backs.  Many of the platinum and gold cufflinks were lost during World War II when platinum,  a strategic metal,  was needed for the war effort.

The 14kt gold backs of the cufflinks are as well crafted as the fronts.  The links are connected with sturdy cross bars and brackets and the backs polished to a mirror-like finish - please excuse the reflections from our camera.  The backs of the cufflinks are marked "GOLD & PLAT" for the precious metals.

The cross bars are stamped with the hallmark of Carrington & Company,  a "C" surrounding "14".  Carrington & Company was a maker of fine cufflinks and jewels from 1900 to the 1950.  Carrington was based in Newark, New Jersey and supplied beautiful platinum and 14kt gold cufflinks to many of the finest jewelers of the day.
