Elegant Serpent Cufflinks

Victorian serpent cufflinks crafted in 14kt gold. (J8838)

Victorian Serpents!

The Victorians were fascinated with serpent inspired jewelry.  Entwined or coiled snakes were viewed as symbols of a happy marriage and long life.  These cufflinks are a nice example from the late Victorian period.  Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1900.

The cufflinks are beautifully modeled and richly detailed.  Note the scales along the serpent's back and the details of the head.   The twisting serpent fills the top of the cufflinks with its body creating a dramatic border.

The cufflinks are well crafted.  The tops are attached to bean backs with sturdy "double U" brackets and curved bridges.  The elegance of the design is matched by the goldsmith's attention to finish and small details.

These cufflinks were created by the jewelry makers Link & Angell around 1900.  The firm was founded by William Link in 1871 and created fine gold and sterling jewelry until the early 1930s. The inside of the bean backs are stamped with the maker's mark of Link & Angell (three links enclosing an "L", "&" and "A") and the purity of the gold ("14K").
