Starburst-Cut Sapphire Ring

| A vibrant starburst-cut sapphire sparkling in
our showcase caught the eye of a friend. She was attracted
to the gem's strongly saturated bluish-Violet color and its
clean, crystalline appearance. The starburst cut
gives this gem an intoxicating blue brilliance.
Of course beautiful gemstones should be set in beautiful jewels. We worked with our client to create a custom platinum ring featuring the sapphire and two princess-cut diamonds. The ring is a variation of our Tango design adjusted for the shape and size of the sapphire.  We call the faceting style of the sapphire a "starburst." When well done, this faceting style gives a gemstone an incredible, star-like brilliance. The technical terminology for the sapphire's cut is "a modified square fancy cut with step-cut crown and brilliant-cut pavilion." We think "starburst" is much more descriptive. To best show off the sapphire's starry brilliance, we set the gem diagonally with four sturdy "V - shape" prongs - one at each corner. The princess-cut diamonds are also set along the diagonal in platinum bezel settings.  This side view shows the care with which our platinum smith crafted this ring. The platinum prongs are sturdy and slightly taper from top to bottom. The bezel settings holding the princess-cut diamonds are perfectly positioned and extend through the depth of the band. The thickness of the band throughout its circumference and especially at its base ensures that this ring will last a lifetime and then some. |
