Onyx and Pearl Dress SetCarrington Onyx and Pearl |
Elegant onyx centers with luminous white
pearls surrounded by ornate platinum borders. The borders
are a stylized representation of a laurel wreath in the best Art
Deco taste. A full dress set, created by Carrington
& Company, consisting of a pair of cufflinks, shirt
studs and vest buttons. Crafted in platinum and 14kt
gold, circa 1925. Complementing the cufflinks are three shirt studs with octagonal onyx and pearl centers and engraved platinum borders. The studs have spring loaded backs - a design first introduced in 1898 by Halsey M. Larter. The dress set features four vest buttons with onyx and pearl centers. In a subtle design variation, the platinum sides of the vest buttons and shirt studs are alternately engraved and smoothly finished. A nod to Carrington's reputation for understated elegance. The backs of the cufflinks, shirt studs and vest buttons are beautifully crafted in 14kt gold and polished to a mirror-like finish (please excuse any reflections from my camera). Note the sturdy cross bars and strong brackets that secure the cufflinks on the cuff. A reflection of Carrington's uncompromising commitment to fine design and craftsmanship.
The reverses of the cufflinks and vest buttons are signed with the maker's mark of Carrington & Company, an angular "C" surrounding "14". A precious metal mark for gold and platinum, "GOLD&PLAT", is stamped on the opposite side of the backs. During the first half of the 20th century Carrington & Company was one of the preeminent makers of fine dress sets and cufflinks. The firm's gold and platinum cuff jewels were retailed at Tiffany & Company and other carriage trade jewelers of the day.
