Fierce Dragon Stickpin

French chimera and pearl stickpin (SP9536)

Chimera and Pearl

French chimera and pearl stickpin (SP9536)
A fierce dragon clutches a luminous pearl in its maw.  In the late 19th century jewelers in France created a golden menagerie of fantastic creatures and mythical beasts.  This richly detailed chimera is a wonderful example of the dramatic and at times terrifying work of the fin de siecle jewelry artists.  Beautifully crafted  in 18kt gold,  circa 1900.

The back of the stickpin illustrates the care with which antique French jewels were created (photo below).  Note the fluid solidity of the reverse of the dragon and the stout pin stem which is anchored to the back of the chimera with a sturdy double strut.  The French assay mark for 18kt gold (an eagle's head) and an indistinct maker's mark are stamped along the upper sides of the pin stem.

Cost:  Although this elegant stickpin has sold,  you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery.

Measurements:  This stickpin is  3" long and weighs 3.1 grams.  The dragon top is  5/8" tall by 3/4" wide.
