Gothic Revival StickpinLady in Cloak! |
A mysterious maiden stares outward from beneath a hooded cloak. This late Victorian stickpin in the Gothic Revival taste is wonderfully sculpted and richly detailed. Note the small rose brooch or clasp that holds the cloak at the woman's neck. A small diamond is suspended from a golden chain lying across the shoulders of her richly embellished cloak. Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1890.
The Victorians held a strong interest in the arts and myths of the Middle Ages. Perhaps the jeweler who created this jewel was inspired by the Gothic novel's Sir Walter Scott or the medieval-inspired paintings of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The stickpin is well crafted and secured on the lapel with a sturdy pin stem (see picture below). The back is solid. Beneath the pin stem "14" is stamped for the purity of the gold. Cost: Although this elegant stickpin has sold, you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery. |
