Black Tie Elegance

Elegant onyx tops engraved with flowing scrolls framing small, luminous pearls.  The contrasting black-and-white centers are set in Art Deco white gold borders with finely milgrained edges.  This striking dress set was created by Larter & Sons in 14kt white and yellow gold circa 1925.

This full dress set epitomizes the sophistication and elegance of evening dress in the early 20th century.  The set consists of a pair of double-ended cufflinks, three matching shirt studs (shown above) and four matching vest buttons (one shown below).  Each piece repeats the engraved onyx and pearl motif of the cufflinks.

As with all important jewels, you should examine the backs of cufflinks as closely as the fronts.  The 14kt yellow gold backs of these cufflinks, shirt studs and vest buttons are all finely crafted with smooth, polished surfaces and softly rounded edges.  Sturdy cross bars and strap brackets secure the cufflinks on the cuff.

Close-up of Larter & Sons maker's mark. (J9149)

The maker's mark of Larter & Sons is a stylized profile of a spring-loaded shirt stud introduced by the firm in the late 1800s.  Here it is seen stamped on the cross bars of the cufflinks.  Flanking the maker's mark are "14" and "K" for the purity of the gold.
