Egyptian Revival Stickpin

Hans Brassler Egyptian Revival stickpin. (J9136)

Pharaohs and Scarab

An Egyptian Revival stickpin with two pharaohs flanking a scarab carved in heliotrope (bloodstone).  The pharaohs and other design elements are beautifully modeled with a rich patina that throws myriad fine details into high relief.  Created by Hans Brassler in 14kt gold, circa 1910.

Hans Brassler was an imaginative jeweler known for the originality and artistry of his designs.  He was born in Germany and studied at the Academie Julian in Paris.  He is reported to have earned a gold medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle.  Later he worked with Tiffany & Company prior to founding his own firm, The Brassler Company, in 1909.  Brassler served as creative director of the firm for about six years during which period he created an extraordinary collection of richly detailed, striking jewels.

The design and detail of the pharaohs is repeated on the reverse of the pin (photograph below).  Although the back is usually hidden from view, it was believed that a jewel should be beautiful from every direction, even unseen ones.

Cost:  Although this elegant stickpin has sold,  you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery.

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is 2 5/8" long and weighs 4.2 grams.  The top measures 11/16" by  9/16".

The stickpin is beautifully crafted in 14kt gold and secured with a sturdy gold pin stem.  The maker's mark of The Brassler Company, an oval cartouche enclosing "14" followed by a "B", is stamped on the middle reverse.  In the above photo, the oval outline of the cartouche is visible to the right of the pin stem.
