Laurels and Amethyst

Triumphant laurel wreathes rise to either side of a rich purple amethyst.  Below a small luminous pearl glows in a golden trefoil setting.  An elegant stickpin created by Hans Brassler in 14kt gold, circa 1910.

Brassler was an imaginative jeweler known for the creativity and artistry of his designs.  He often wedded elements of Neoclassical, Gothic and Art Deco design to create jewels of striking originality and unique beauty.

This stickpin is beautifully crafted with a solid gold frame to protect and cradle the gemstones and a sturdy gold pin stem to secure the jewel when worn.  The maker's mark of the Brassler workshop (a double oval encircling "14 B") is stamped on the upper right of the reverse (see photo below).

Cost:  $535

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is 2 1/2" long and the top measures 5/8" by  7/16".  It weighs 2.0 grams.

Hans Brassler was one of the more innovative jewelry designers working in the early 20th century.  A native of Germany,  he studied jewelry design at the Academie Julian in Paris and is reported to have earned a gold medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle.  He emigrated to the United States in 1902 and worked with Tiffany & Company for a period.  In 1909 he founded his own firm, The Brassler Company.  Brassler was with the firm as artistic director for about six years during which time he created an extraordinary collection of strikingly original jewels.  His daughter is the noted 20th century sculptor Margaret Brassler Kane
