Art Deco Terrier BroochArt Deco Terrier! |
A wonderful Art Deco brooch of a small terrier set against an elegantly simple white gold back bar. The richly detailed pup is the perfect complement to the stark elegance of the setting. Crafted in 15kt and 9kt gold, circa 1925.
This little pup has a lot of charm. His rich, curling fur and buckled collar are beautifully rendered in 15kt gold. I have described him as a terrier, but what type of terrier - Scottie, Westie, Norfolk ... - is for the reader to decide. Unfortunately, my knowledge of man's best friend is largely limited to beagles and other hounds.
The brooch was created by the British jeweler Alabaster & Wilson in the 1920s or early 1930s. A&W was founded in 1887 and created wonderful jewels during the late Victorian period and early 20th century. The maker's mark of Alabaster & Wilson ("A&W") is stamped on the reverse of the white gold bar followed by a patent filing notice. With characteristic English thoroughness the purity of the gold is marked three times on the brooch - twice on the pin stem and white gold bar ("9ct") and once on the back of the terrier's collar ("15ct").
