Tribune Tower Contest Cufflinks

| In 1922 the owners of Chicago's leading
newspaper, the Chicago Tribune, held an architectural
competition soliciting designs for a new headquarters
building. These beautifully crafted cufflinks celebrate
the contest and what I believe is the original tower. An
elegant piece of architectural history. Crafted in 14kt
gold, circa 1922.
 The backs of the cufflinks are well crafted. Note the sturdy thickness of the gold tops and the strong, elongated oval links and ring brackets which secure these cufflinks on the cuff. The backs are stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold and with the maker's mark of Whitehead & Hoag.
 Whitehead & Hoag was a diverse manufacturer of badges and commemorative items with a specialty in finely crafted medals and commemorative jewels in gold and silver. The firm's virtuosity in the medalist's art can be seen in the fine details and design of these cufflinks.
 The 1922 Tower Contest was a huge publicity triumph for the Tribune. The contest attracted an international following and over 250 design suggestions including submissions by Eliel Saarinen, Walter Gropius, Adolf Loos and other leading architects of the day. Among my favorite designs is the perhaps tongue-in-cheek "Newspaper Column" proposed by Loos.
