Tiffany Renaissance Brooch

Tiffany Renaissance style pin. (J9337)

Tiffany Renaissance

A beguiling Tiffany brooch in the Renaissance Revival style.  The pin depicts a woman with a spear and shield protecting a mother and child.  The woman appears to be clothed in classical garb.  The figures are beautifully modeled and set in an oval frame with four floral stations all resting atop an outer lozenge-shaped frame.  The design is reminiscent of jewels created during the earlier Renaissance Revival of the 1800s.  Created by Tiffany & Co. in 14kt gold, circa 1915.

We have not identified the inspiration for this intriguing jewel.  It may have been a badge or emblem created by Tiffany & Co. for a fraternal or religious society.  Or, perhaps it was created, as I suspect, as a memorial or patriotic piece during the first World War.  A little mystery always adds to the charm of an antique jewel.  The thoughts and insights of readers are always welcome.

The jewel is well crafted with a solid, sturdy gold frame.  Note the crispness of the edges and consistent, smooth surfaces.  A sturdy pin stem and early safety clasp secure the jewel on a blouse, lapel or hat.  This diminutive pin exemplifies the elegant designs and fine craftsmanship associated with Tiffany & Co. in the early 1900s.

The reverse of the brooch is signed with Tiffany & Company's maker's mark and the purity of the gold ("14KT. GOLD").  Beneath the gold purity mark is a small "m" in Gothic script.  This is the signature of John C. Moore II,  director of Tiffany & Co from 1907 to 1947.  Mr. Moore's initial was placed on pieces created during his tenure.  The Moore family had a long affiliation with Tiffany & Co. dating back to the mid 1800s.
