Fierce Lion Stickpin
Roaring Lion! |
|
A regal lion grasps a pearl in his mouth and stares with fiery red eyes (likely rubies). Beautifully sculpted with finely detailed whiskers and mane. Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1890.
The Victorians delighted in a menagerie of exotic and fantastic creatures. Lions, dragons, griffins and owls embellished stickpins and other small jewels of the period. This stickpin was created by Hayden W. Wheeler & Company, a jewelry and watch case maker based in New York. Founded in the early 1850s, the firm created elegant stickpins, cufflinks and other jewels until the early 1930s. The reverse of the stickpin (pictured below) is as nicely crafted as the front. A small plaque set inside the head displays the maker's mark of Hayden W. Wheeler - a large "W" enclosing a smaller "H" and "W". The purity of the gold is indicated by a "14K" surrounding the maker's mark. Cost: Sold | ![]() |
