Fierce Lion Stickpin

Victorian lion and pearl stickpin. (J9012)

Roaring Lion!

A regal lion grasps a pearl in his mouth and stares with fiery red eyes (likely rubies).  Beautifully sculpted with finely detailed whiskers and mane.  Crafted in 14kt gold,  circa 1890.

The Victorians delighted in a menagerie of exotic and fantastic creatures.  Lions, dragons, griffins and owls embellished stickpins and other small jewels of the period.  This stickpin was created by Hayden W. Wheeler & Company, a jewelry and watch case maker based in New York.

The reverse of the stickpin (pictured below) is as nicely crafted as the front.  A small plaque set inside the head displays the maker's mark of Hayden W. Wheeler.

Cost:  Although this elegant stickpin has sold,  you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery.

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is  2 1/2" long and weighs 2.0 grams.  The lion measures  1/2" by  just over 3/8".
