Victorian whimsical Griffin Pin/Watch Chatelaine |
|
|
This whimsical 14kt yellow gold griffin pin is a wonderful example of late Victorian Jewelry (circa 1900). During the
latter part of the Victorian Period, the jewelers created many whimsical scatter pins and watch chatelaine
pins in the form of animals, birds, insects and fantasy like creatures. The griffin was a common design
of the period and is seen in many forms of jewelry including pins, watch chatelaine pins, brooches, hat pins,
watch fobs and pendants. The maker is possibly American.
Chased and repoussed, this griffin has a wonderfully textured body and wings and a serpent like coiled body. He holds a small baroque pearl (possibly natural) in his mouth and has a small round cabochon green stone set in his eye. This diminutive pin is very well made and has exceptional detail and design.

The back of this pin has a "c" shaped clasp, hallmarked and a later hinge. Also, there is a sweeping chatelaine hook for suspending a small pendant or lapel watch. Watch chatelaine pins were very popular during this time. The watch would be suspended from a decorative pin and worn on one's dress or lapel. |
