An beguiling pair of possum cufflinks crafted in sterling silver by Unger Brothers. These cufflinks are a wonderful example of the whimsical spirit common to the silver jewelry created in the United States during the Art Nouveau period (circa 1900).
Characteristic of Art Nouveau jewelry, the designer of these cufflinks used the possum's curling tail to define the lower edge of the jewel. In other Art Nouveau jewels you will find similar effects created with a woman's flowing hair or the curling smoke of a cigarette. Art Nouveau jewelers often allowed their flowing subject matter to define the shape and form of a jewel. |

Unger Brothers was one of the premier American firms to create silver jewelry and objets d'art in the Art Nouveau style. Based in Newark, New Jersey, they designed and manufactured beautiful jewelry from 1881 through 1910. |
