Elegant Moonstone CufflinksMoonstruck! |
The luminous, lustrous glow of fine Moonstones. The Victorians were entranced with the inescapable elegance of this gem as it glimmered in flickering candle and gaslight. This pair of gold cufflinks by Carter, Howe features two beautiful oval Moonstones. Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
To enhance the mesmerizing effect of the Moonstones, the maker of the cufflinks backed the gems with iridescent Mother of Pearl. The glowing Moonstones are bezel set and surrounded with elegantly chased gold borders.
The cufflinks are exceptionally well constructed. The tops are securely connected to the rounded backs with sturdy curved bridges. Note that the reverse of the tops is finished in gold to protect the Moonstones and Mother of Pearl. Carter, Howe was renowned for careful attention to details in designing and crafting jewels.
The cross bars are stamped with the maker's mark of Carter, Howe & Company (later Carter, Gough & Co.), creators of fine gold and platinum jewelry during the early decades of the last century. The maker's mark is a small arrowhead surrounding the letter "C". To the left of the maker's mark is the gold purity mark ("14").
