Heliotrope and Gold Cufflinks

Heliotrope

Heliotrope, more commonly known as "bloodstone," is a beautiful variety of quartz with bright red spots set in dark green jasper.  Fine examples,  such as these, have the appearance of fiery embers smouldering in a bed of dark ashes.  One end of these cufflinks features a long polished bloodstone cut en cabochon while the other is a carved scarab.  Created by Riker Bros. in 14kt gold, circa 1940.

The cufflinks are well crafted with polished gold backs that support and protect the heliotropes.  Sturdy figure-eight cross links and hoop brackets secure the cufflinks on the cuff.  These cufflinks may have been a custom commission to showcase the striking set of heliotropes.

The cross bars are stamped with the maker's mark of Riker Bros. (an "R" above a small saber).  The cross bars are also stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold.  Riker Bros. was a maker of fine gold cufflinks, stickpins and other jewels during the Victorian era and into the following century.  The firm was founded in Newark New Jersey in 1846 and ceased operations in the mid 20th century
