Elegant Amethyst Cufflinks
| Rich purple amethysts set in finely crafted
yellow gold bezels. These elegant cufflinks were created
at a time when 14kt yellow gold often had a wonderful, slightly
reddish coloration known as "antique gold". In these
cufflinks the antique blush of the gold plays beautifully
against the hues of the amethysts. Created by Carter, Howe
& Co. in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
These finely crafted cufflinks are secured on the cuff with strong curved bridges and sturdy bean backs. The bean backs are hand-engraved in a flowing Victorian script with the initials of the original owner, "F.C.S."
The bridges are stamped "14K" for the purity of the gold followed by the maker's mark of Carter, Howe & Co., an arrowhead enclosing a small "C". Carter, Howe (later Carter, Gough) was a maker of fine cufflinks, stickpins and other well-designed gentleman's accessories. The firm was founded in 1841 and created beautiful jewels for nearly 100 years, finally closing its doors during the economic turmoil of the early 1930s.
